Georgia Electrical License FAQ

Requirements can change. Confirm current requirements with the GA Secretary of State.

How do I get an electrical contractor license in Georgia?

Georgia's Board of Electrical Contractors, under the Secretary of State, licenses electrical contractors. There are two license types: Restricted and Non-Restricted. You create an account in the GOALS portal, choose your license type, complete the online application, upload the required documents and pay the fee.

Do I need approval before taking the exam?

Yes. If you have never held the license, you apply for licensure by exam, and the Board must approve you before you can sit for it. The checklist includes a signed, notarized application with a $110 fee, a background check, work experience, three references, a secure and verifiable document, and an affidavit of citizenship.

How much experience do I need, and what work does each class cover?

Experience requirements and the scope of each license are set by the Board. Check the GA Secretary of State before you apply.

How long does processing take, and can I work while I wait?

Applications are generally processed within 20 business days of receipt, but times vary, and the clock restarts if you get a deficiency letter. You may not legally perform services until you hold an active license.

When do I renew?

Licenses renew every two years, online, by June 30 of even-numbered years. A late renewal period runs July 1 to July 31, with a late fee added.
